The start of the 1972 season for Zandvoort was a restricted program; the group 2 field had a little extra time for some preparation, so here we had only two group 1 races.
The small class had changed a little; up to 7.000 Guilders, we had two Mazda 1300’s, fighting it out with the Simca Rallye brigade - pending the homologation of the 1300 cc Rallye 1. The 8.500 Guilder class would be fought out between the NSU TT’s, some Ford Escort Sports and a single Fiat 128 Rally.
Saturday started with - snow, so the morning practice did not take part at all. In the afternoon, weather was a little better.
The more expensive cars were faster during practice, van Kempen (Fiat) taking pole, while van Boom disappointed - he was second, but a staggering 4,3 seconds behind van Kempen.
In the race everything came good for him, he won the race after an exciting dice with van Kempen. He was about 10 cm in front after 12 laps! The Simca class was won by Loek Vermeulen - in a Mazda...
The big group 1 cars, new this year, did not attract the big entry some of us had expected. Still, the three classes had some good cars, though the standard of preparation of the DNRT was not within the reach of most of the other competitors.
All three Opels were the class of their class. Huub Vermeulen’s main opposition was a Steinmetz Commodore for Dolk, but he could not keep up after a bad start. The 14.000 Guilder class was won by another DNRT-Opel, the Manta of Rien Frankenhout. Brother Fred (11.000 Guilder class, Opel Ascona) had more competition - he had a fine start, leading initially (!), but Rien had to make clear that the Manta was 3.000 Guilders more expensive and passed Fred, leaving him in a fight with Piet Schouten (more expensive Capri) and van der Pol (more expensive Alfa). Fred won his class with ease.
After the race, some cars were put on Rob Janssen’s testbed. The DNRT Ascona and Manta had 96 HP at the wheels, which must be somewhere around 120 DIN HP at the crankshaft. Quite a lot, but could be explained by the homologation goodies. The Commodore must have had something like 175 DIN HP.
Most competitors were flabbergasted; they came to Zandvoort with virtual standard cars (Group 1 must be intended to be like this?), but were blown away by these well-prepared DNRT Opels - which were always found to be legal.
