Scandal at the Nürburgring; timekeeping in practice 1 was a farce, in the end all times were declared invalid, a blow for everyone who could not take part in the second session because of problems with the car.

Fritzinger had rebuilt his car, but despite it being an exact replica the car behaved totally different. Fritzinger changed his driving style accordingly, and oversteering he clocked a fine 8.54,0, second after Stuck (8.33,6). Odenthal was one of the victims of the timekeeping troubles and had to start from the back. Barth, originally intending to drive the Andersson Porsche was drafted into the Grab Capri, only to finish practice with a broken camshaft - he could not start. The ballasted Porsches of Schickentanz and Neuhaus (after the Hockenheim GT disaster) had no troubles and finished practice third and fourth, just in front of Menzel, fastest of division 1 in his rebuilt Escort.

After the start, the leading trio was Stuck-Fritzinger-Heyer, Stuck taking the advice to take it easy very literally, when he had to rev his engine to 8200 rpm to catch Fritzinger just before the finish. Heyer came third, before the two Porsches and Joisten, who had a pit stop. Joisten was passed by division 2 winner Menzel, who had a good and safe race - any more wrecks and his career would suffer, he was told.
Schüler had retired after lap 2, and Obermoser’s car used only 3 cylinders for part of the race - he was unable to catch Basche. Odenthal had came as high as 8th before she had to give up with injection trouble, while Christmann’s left rear brake was hampered by oil leakage, a justification for his judgement that the car did not brake well.
