The organisers had made a mess of their time schedule here, the final practice of the DRM could only start on Saturday night - in the dark. A feat which would be repeated in 2003 with the DTM, but that was meant to be that way - not here. A hastily added training on Sunday morning was not made clear to everyone, so that did not do any good either. Friday practice had seen Fritzinger hitting the barriers, and he went to Cologne to get the car fixed. It returned on Saturday afternoon, but still with a bent rear axle and provisional repairs on the front. Menzel did likewise, after a shattering 9.00,6 (second overall) he left the track after the jump at Schwalbenschwanz, deforming the Zakspeed Escort. Zakowski’s crew had to add a nightshift too. Waldegaard had all sorts of trouble, being the next Engeman replacement in the Bulova Capri. First problems with the bearing on the left front wheel, then the ignition cut, then gearbox and differential gave trouble. A brake line broke. The front suspension was changed. Only the engine gave no problems - yet.
Heyer’s Opel GT had Solex fuel injection now. It gave many teething problems.
Christmann, in the Gerstmann Capri once again, clocked a fine third (9.01,4), but fastest by a wide margin was Stuck, in 8.38,9, his Capri featuring the strongest-ever Weslake engine, the first one to give a full 300 HP on the brake.

46 cars took the start, Stuck in the lead but behind him a fierce battle raged, Christmann leading Barth, and when Barth tried to pass, Christmann closed the door and both went off, and Barth had to head for the pits get some body parts out of the way, while Christmann pressed on, to eventually regain second.

Fritzinger with his bent car did all he could, starting from row 7, and finally finishing as high as third. Frau Odenthal, 4th in practice, finished in that position, while Joisten came fifth. Waldegaard on the other hand retired after lap 2 with a broken engine.

In division 1, Menzel signalled handling problems after lap 1, culminating in missing a corner and splitting his tire. So Schüler had no competition but still keeping a fast pace with a fastest lap of 8.54,5, breaking the 9-minute barrier for division 2. He did the right thing: in lap 4, he had to come in, water being added while the engine was running, and after lap 6 he had passed Basche once again. Hegels came third at the finish, behind Schüler and Basche.
With 161 points, Stuck was already champion, Fritzinger a distant second but the fight for third place was still interesting.
