Practice saw Kelleners/Pankl (Alpina BMW 2800CS) as fastest (9.07,0), followed by Capri privateer Fritzinger, who was helped by works driver Stuck, a works engine, some works mechanics and Kranefuss who just happened to be there. Next were Furtmayr/Ertl in a 2002 Alpina BMW and Heyer/Betzler in the AMG Mercedes, still looking for the form of Spa 1971.

99 cars took the start, Menzel/Blank missing because of an engine failure in practice. The Mercedes was in de lead after lap 1, followed by the Alpina coupé, Odenthal and Ertl. First in the box was Christmann in the Steinmetz Commodore, repairing a broken ignition wire. The Mercedes came in with high water temperature, but after a refill Heyer could continue.

After three laps the order was settled, Odenthal/Schüler leading followed by Kelleners/Pankl, Stuck/Fritzinger, Lips/Kautz and Furtmayr/Ertl. Joisten/Neuhaus were the first of the favourites to retire, with a blown engine. Next the Steinmetz Commodore retired with a broken gearbox.

While most competitors take it relatively easy, Ertl first moves a Steyr-Puch out of the way, resulting in a damaged front on the 2002, and had an off after six hours, presumably blinded by a Capri he just had passed. He comes in with a damaged wheel and a lot of damage, after repairs he retires in the same lap with a broken gearbox. The order at that moment: Kelleners/Pankl, Odenthal/Schüler, Lips/Kautz (#2 Faltz car), Fritzinger/Stuck (after some pit work) and Heyer/Betzler. The last one is the next retirement; after a routine stop, Heyer can’t continue - the differential locks. Out.

In 6th place is now the Van Eupen Kadett, leading the 2000 cc class. But early in the morning, its crossflow head gives up.

Just after midnight, the Odenthal Capri retires, after being in contention of most of the race. A leaf spring of the rear axle had broken, which could not be repaired in time. After 12 hours, the order was Fritzinger/Stuck, Kelleners/Pankl, Lips/Kautz, Zweibäumer/Ferves (2002) and Lenze/Döring (1600/2). Retirements during the night included all Alfa Romeo 1300 GTAJ’s and the second Koepchen 2002.

The fight for the lead was still exciting. At nearly every pit stop the lead would change, the leading duo still in the same lap, the third placed team Zweibäumer/Ferves six laps behind, until they had to retire too, which handed the lead in the 2000 cc class to a Group 1 Opel Ascona, well prepared, driven by Vermeulen and Frankenhout. They would finish 9th overall.

The Lips/Kautz BMW cried enough without warning; and the duel for the lead was finally settled when Stuck had a puncture 2,5 hours before the end and had to drive 16 km to reach the pits, where some damage had to be repaired as well.

The Alpina pits were surprised to see Pankl asking for an unscheduled driver change, since he was feeling sick. When Kelleners came in a few laps later and wanted a driver change too, it was discovered that exhaust fumes came inside the car. Since the race was nearly over, they got away with it.
Fritzinger, second now, thanked the marshals at Karussell (they had spurred him on every lap to drive faster) by stopping there on the last lap, asked them to light his cigarette, went back into the car and driving at a leisurely pace to the finish, where his team waited on him nail-biting.
