The winner of this race would be Ford - since the homologation of the BMW 3.0 CSL failed, too few were built so BMW had to race the heavy 2800 CS instead. The investments of Munich in the direction of Broadspeed UK - they built a lightweight coupé - were useless, just like the already built lightweight Schnitzer car. Alpina did not bother to enter Monza altogether, so the only opposition for the Capris came from the Schnitzer cars, of which several examples found their way to Monza.

Practice was dominated by Ford, Glemser fastest, Larrousse second but way back, just 0,1 second in front of Quester. The explanation for this was the fact that Larrousse had to use the spare car since Mass had a big off with the new car. Mass himself was at Le Mans Test weekend with yet another Capri.
Division 2 was led by the British works Escort of Birrell/Bourgoignie, followed by the Dutch privateer car of Akersloot/Franey. Autodelta entered some GTAm’s, not in the same league anymore but to entertain the Italian crowd. Division 1, things looked better for Autodelta; no competition in sight here, of the 35 entries only 14 could start, of which 13 were cars from Milan. The other one was from Turin.

After the start, Mass disappeared into the distance and never looked back. He was followed by Quester, Peltier and Birrell. Glemser dropped back with ignition troubles. This was repaired, but after setting a new lap record the car retired one hour before the end.
Quester had retired with a broken gearbox, the privateer car of Peltier did a good job however, keeping up with the Escort and the Frami Capri of Franck/Engeman; the last one was to retire eventually.
A fine victory for Ford, Peltier second and division 2 winner Birrell third, followed by the Dutch Escort. Alfa Romeo won the small class, after the lonely Fiat retired in lap 1.
