Frank Gardner took the SCA Camaro to victory in a tremendously exciting final round of the Wiggins Teape Paperchase saloon championship, securing for himself the Tarmac Drivers title in the process. For most of the twenty laps he was under great pressure from Gerry Birrell and Brian Muir in 2.9 Capris and the Escorts of Tom Walkinshaw and Dave Matthews.
Birrell and Walkinshaw both retired near the end but Muir finished only half a second in arrears and Matthews' class-winning Melton/Broadspeed Escort with an aluminium block BDA was hardly farther back. Birrell took the lap record beneath the 100-second bogey as consolation while Matthews also set a new class record. Gardner, Matthews, Buncombe and McGovern had already won their classes in the championship before the event but in any case all four won their respective sections.
