The Moffat/Jane battle for the Australian Touring Car Championship resumed with a vengeance in the fifth round at Adelaide International Raceway — so much so that the pair were both shown the black and white 'bad sportsmanship' flag to remind them that they would be blackflagged out of the race should the pushing and leaning on one another continue. The pair were neck and neck for 25 of the 40 laps until Moffat gave Jane's Camaro a bit of a nudge going into the corner onto the oval section of the circuit, and the Bob Jane Racing Team car spun off onto the grass. No action was taken by the stewards, but Moffat was most unpopular with the crowd over the incident and, almost to a man they cheered wildly when — on lap 33 — the Mustang began to belch clouds of smoke and slow dramatically. Jane soared by into the lead once more as Moffat was black flagged by the clerk of the course so that the cause of the smoke could be identified. Moffat was allowed to re-enter the race to finish at reduced speed, while Bob Jane went on to a 5,7-second victory over 'Pete' Geoghegan. Geoghegan was driving a new Falcon, replacing the older car from which the engine and running gear had been taken. The new car was fully seam welded and had a roll cage that doubled as stiffener for the whole body and, although the car had just been finished and was not fully sorted, it was known to have a lot of potential and looked a threat for supremacy in the very near future. The 5AD/City State Racing Team Holden Kingswood of Malcolm Ramsay had taken another great third placing that indicated that he was scoring on reliability, although this was not entirely true, for the car had run the latter part of the race with only third gear. Moffat had been able to hold down fourth place in spite of his pit stop and ailing engine, to notch up some valuable points towards the series, and he was followed home by Graeme Blanchard's Chevrolet Camaro. Sixth was the seemingly invincible under 2-litre car of Michael Stillwell, which had once again scored maximum class points and was leading the series with 45 points to 44 for Jane, 39 for Moffat, 28 for Geoghegan, 22 for Holden, and 21 for Ramsay — although Stillwell, as the only driver to have scored points in all rounds would still have to drop one of these scores, and was therefore not necessarily comfortably ahead on points. |
