Despite the presence of a hard-charging Frank Gardner, enjoying a return to saloons in the 5-litre SCA Freight Camaro, Brian Muir in the Wiggins Teape/Gartlan 5.7-litre Camaro romped home to his fourth successive class (third outright) win in the suave blue American pony express. Gardner finished second overall after a fine drive up from fifth place on the opening lap.
Other class winners were John Fitzpatrick - in a teething trouble-stricken 1.8 Escort RS for Broadspeed/Team Castrol, David Matthews in the sister Broadspeed Escort 1300 GT and the screaming Sunbeam Imp prepared so smartly by George Bevan and driven by burly Bill McGovern. Muir took 1.4s off the Group 2 outright saloon and over 2000 cc record, leaving it at 1.37,6 (107.91 mph) and setting an average speed higher than the old record. Fitzpatrick massacred Craft's twin-cam class record, taking just one second longer for a lap than Muir, finally Matthews pared just 0.2s from the 1001-1300 cc record.
