The Paul Ricard race was a 2 heat affair of each 6 hours duration, with big prize money, attracting a few stars under which Graham Hill and John Surtees driving a British Capri RS. Brian Muir’s Camaro was joining the party too, as was the mighty AMG Mercedes, accompanied by Klaus Behrmann’s private car. Alpina had a star pairing with Ickx/Beltoise, with the regular Schnitzer BMW and Cologne Capris rounding off the entry. Two works Capris occupied the front row, together with Muir, while the Schnitzer BMW and the British Capri were on row two. A few cars were in arrears just after the start; a rocket start from Aaltonen sheared off the Schnitzer’s half shaft (which was repaired), while Muir spun while fighting in the lead group, blowing up the engine in the process. Stommelen lost it on Muir’s oil and hit the armco, damaging the left front of his Capri which cost him 20 minutes in the pits. Grauls finally slaughtered his car in the same curve. Hill/Surtees and Glemser/Soler-Roig were leading most of the time, cashing each hour. Stommelen/Birrell recovered well, climbing up in the field. Since Picchi won division 1, there was no change in the championship positions. |
