No championship status anymore for this race, with its atypical long-distance character. But there were even more surprises in store. The Nordschleife was not ready yet with the changes to get Formula 1 back to the circuit - so the race would be held on the Südschleife. This caused the Touring Car races to be shortened, since the fields had to be smaller on the narrow and shorter track. And the infamous Eifel weather had struck once again; on Saturday there was a heavy fog!

Rennen 1
The Group 1 cars were faster here than the 850 Group 2 ones. Since all 850 Abarths fell by the wayside, Feitler (Renault 8 Gordini) had an easy win.

Rennen 4
Menzel was fastest of the field, opening a lead right after the start. Gleich complained about handling problems and could never keep up. Apart from Gleich, the whole field was lapped, sometimes with brute force: poor Lerche (Daf) ended in a ditch with a damaged car. An amusing exchange of views was printed in 1971 Sport Auto. Third finisher was Hessel (Abarth), after a fight with Mineif (Fiat 128).

Rennen 5
The group 1 race was not covered in the contemporary press.

Rennen 6
The fastest car in practice, Christmann in the Koepchen-2002, retired in the warm-up lap but re-entered the race a few laps - and was disqualified. Hessel took the lead, but when he hit gearbox trouble Bergner could pass, while Hessel still won his class.
