Group 2 saloon car racing is the subject of some controversy at present and the supporting races at Crystal Palace did little to improve its image. Racing was split into two 25-lappers, up to 1300 cc, and over. A predictable overall victory went to Brian Muir in the Wiggins Teape/Malcolm Gartlan 5.7 Chevrolet Camaro after Fitzpatrick's well-used BDA stopped propelling his Broadspeed/Castrol Escort, and John Bloomfield therefore took that class.
In the smaller capacity division Broadspeed fortunes were again at low tide, Dave Matthews losing a comfortable first place in the team's Escort GT due to a broken throttle linkage, thus Vince Woodman took the similar ex-Fitzpatrick VMW Motors entered Escort to an easy victory over the tri-wheeling Bevan Imp of Bill McGovern, which naturally won the 1-litre category.
