The opening round of the 1971 RAC Saloon Car Championship, the Hepolite-Glacier Trophy, was divided into two parts with an overall result based on aggregate performance. Some exciting racing featured a giant-killing act by the 1.7-litre Team Broadspeed-Castrol Escort driven by John Fitzpatrick, which scored an overall victory by 21.3s over Brian Muir in the 5-litre Z28 Chevrolet Camaro sponsored by Wiggins Teape; Fitzpatrick broke his own class record by 1.9s. Muir's Malcolm Gartlan prepared Camaro suffered a flat tyre in the first race, dropping it to a gallantly held second place, whilst in the second 20 lap thrash Muir just couldn't shake off the wailing Cosworth-Broad powered Escort, which was only 0.3s off Frank Gardner's Boss Mustang lap record. |
