The final round of the RAC Saloon Car Championship which has, of course, been won by Bill McGovern and the Bevan Imp, provided a thrilling spectacle as Gerry Birrell (2.9 Boreham works Capri), Frank Gardner (5.7 SCA Freight Camaro), and John Fitzpatrick (1.8 Broadspeed/ Castrol Escort RS) fought for the lead in one threshing chain. That sort of competition could only last for half of the 20 laps though, Birrell going on to an easy victory after Gardner's mount blew a tyre and sheared into the Broadspeed Escort, eliminating both in a huge shunt at the bridge before Clearways. Both the race and Brian Muir (5.0 Wiggins Teape/Gartlan Z28 Camaro) were sponsored by Wiggins Teape, the amiable Australian finishing a lonely second. Class wins were notched up by John Bloomfield (who recovered superbly after a start line shunt which sidelined four cars), Dave Matthews (1.3 Broadspeed Castrol Escort GT) and McGovern. Despite the tragedy of the previous race the tin-tops charged around, and three class records were broken by substantial margins. |
