The first 24h race of the new group 2 rule set, which moved Porsche back to where they belonged - the GT cars. Grauls took the lead, followed by two Commodores and the Alpina coupé of Kelleners, a car much improved since 1969. As usual, the Camaro ran into problems and Opel took over, only to get into trouble themselves. After five hours, the Haxhe/Toussaint and Pilette/Gosselin cars had to give up. Now the BMW coupé took the lead, but had to fight for their life, with the remaining Commodore of Kauhsen, the Alfa GTAm of Jacquemin/de Cortanze and two Mazda’s - who even took the lead for a while, helped by their excellent pit work. An exiting race by all means! Finally, both Mazda’s fell by the wayside, handing victory to Huber/Kelleners, and Alfa Romeo (the GTAm of Pinto/Berger) had to settle for another second but a win in the Kings’ cup. The little Abarth of Abt/Grano won the First division, the limited number of opponents depriving them once again of well-deserved ETCC points. |
