The new Simca Rally’s were a welcome addition to the small Group 1 class. An Escort was sandwiched between the two French cars, which would have a lasting effect on Dutch racing for some years. Vermeulen’s Simca dropped back amidst a cloud of smoke, but still finished third, behind Frankenhout (Simca) and Mattijssen (Escort). The other Group 1 race was exciting too, Hagman’s NSU rolling in lap 8 and the rest of the field fighting until the end. The group 2 races were divided under and over 1300 cc this time. Akersloot was the man of the day in the under-1300 race. His start was far from ideal, so he was fourth after lap 1. He tried to fight back, but was too fast at the Tarzan corner, and his car left the road. Almost half a lap behind, he started catching up with the leaders again, driving at the limit to finish second, not even in possession of the new “slicks” which winner Boshuis used. Liane Engeman drove well too, only to be disqualified for insufficient ride height. Dijkstra and Zwolsman won their classes; the race provided us with two lap records as well. The big group 2 cars were not as exciting; a procession saw Hezemans and Berg win. |
