Zandvoort kicked off the 1970 season with the Group 1 cars under 6.000 guilders. First, the Escort of Mattijssen took the lead, but the rain promoted the front wheel drive Fiat 128’s to the front. Hazelaar took over, while Mattijssen managed to hold on to second place. The next group 1 race (6000-8000 guilders) was led by van der Pol in the Opel, which had no valid homologation after Wagenaar Hummelinck spun in heavy rain. Behind van der Pol, a good fight took place between Rien Frankenhout (Fiat) and van ‘t Kruis (NSU); Frankenhout won. The small Group 2 race had only 14 starters, Dijkstra and van Staalduinen starting from behind while Leeuwenburgh took the lead. After 5 laps, van Staalduinen took the lead, Leeuwenburgh followed until he ran out of fuel in lap 13. In the 850 class, van de Mast and Aykens retired, so Kievit won easily. Finally, the big Group 2 race had already problems before the start: Slotemaker and Chiotakis received their brand-new cars too late so they could not practice, apart from a few informal laps - they had to start from behind, leaving Hezemans to head the field, followed by van Oorschot in the little NSU. Chiotakis chopped through the field without much problems, while Slotemaker had a little more trouble, even spinning twice during the race. Van Oorschot had retired at Tarzan, and Lubin tried to stay ahead of Berg with an unwilling throttle. |
