Nothing to be said about the group 1 races - let’s concentrate on the championship deciders in group 2. In the first race, two championship candidates: Zwolsman and van Staalduinen. Dijkstra, with a better car this time, was fastest away - van Staalduinen could be content with second place, so he did not try too hard to follow Dijkstra and German guest Wisskirchen, who was not eligible for points. Quite the contrary: fourth place man Nijsten came close, too close, and van Staalduinen could not react - his car was not good enough today (or did he have instructions from SRT Team manager Oosterman?) and he was narrowly beaten on the finish line. No championship for van Staalduinen - and not for Zwolsman either: he retired with a loose battery lead. So champion would be either Akersloot or Hezemans. Boshuis had the task to help team-mate Hezemans by beating Akersloot; but alas, he could take the class lead for only one lap - the superior Akersloot beat Boshuis and van der Sluis to claim the championship, while Chiotakis won the race overall. The 1600 cc class was a furious fight between Engeman, Lubin and Berg - the lady won. Hezemans was furious when he found out the Zandvoort result. Alfa Romeo should have “arranged” something, to give European champion the Dutch title too. Oosterman in fact tried to arrange something with Akersloot half an hour before the race, but the latter refused though he might have been willing if the offer had reached him earlier. Even then, with Akersloot an Alfa Romeo driver too (and even working for Alfa Romeo Nederland!) there was no need for Alfa Romeo to do anything about it. The consequence was that Hezemans left SRT Holland, a team where he had been driving for since early in his career. |
