There was another strong entry for the Nürburgring Six-Hours. BMW were determined to win on their home ground and entered three works cars, turbocharged 2002 TIK’s for Hubert Hahne/Dieter Quester and Dieter Glemser/Dieter Basche and a normally-aspirated version for Ernst Furtmayr/Helmut Kelleners. There were several strong Porsche 911 teams, too, among them Toine Hezemans/Gijs van Lennep and Rolf Stommelen/Georg Loos. There was works representation from Alfa Romeo and British Leyland. Hezemans’ SRT Porsche was the only one to spot big really wide rear wheels - that was, until Stommelen noticed. Overnight, the German 911 got the same treatment.

Quester/Hahne set the pace until a third distance when the BMW stopped with engine trouble. When Glemser, in the lead, touched the bridge at Wehrseifen, he was out too. This gave the lead to Stommelen, but the German Porsche sports car team driver (in Loos' privately-entered 911) tangled with a Fiat 124 and crashed heavily. Fortunately he was not hurt, but in the end it remained unclear whether Stommelen had pushed the Fiat, or the Fiat hadn’t given the Porsche enough room.

Now the Dutch-entered Porsche 911 of Hezemans/van Lennep took command and they stayed ahead until the end, none withstanding ignition problems. Huber in an Alpina-owned BMW 2002 TI ran second until it overheated badly in the closing minutes and fell to third place behind the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA of de Adamich/Dini.

“Pam"/Uberti drove a well-judged race to finish eighth overall and win Division I for 1000 cc cars.
