The Four-Hours saloon car race on Friday was a real turn-up for the book, Jochen Rindt in the GTA Alfa Romeo, which Roberto Bussinello had pranged in practice, winning at an average speed of 87,17 mph, and finishing a lap ahead of the Tullius / Adamowicz Dodge Dart. Rindt's Alfa Romeo was completely rebuilt after being virtually written off in practice. After the start there was a tremendous dice featuring the Wood/Foyt Mustang, Tullius / Adamowicz and Rainville (Plymouth). Foyt was in trouble with brakes. The bigger cars began to be threatened by the de Adamich and Rindt Alfas and the Lotus Cortinas of Sir John Whitmore and Peter Procter. After only eight laps Procter went out with mechanical failure and shortly afterwards Whitmore was forced to retire with clutch trouble. The Mini-Cooper S of Paddy Hopkirk/Peter Manton was in trouble too, going out with a broken timing chain. |
