Pictures

The second edition did not live up to the expectations after the first one. After first confirming an upper limit of 3000 cc, ruling out any Jaguar, Galaxie or Mustang on the fast circuit, drivers were surprised to find out that the actual limit had been set at only 2500 cc. A disappointing 46 entries were the result, with 4 factory BMWs and 4 Mini Coopers (Broadspeed and Cooper sent two each).

Hahne’s BMW was fastest in practice. After the start, Hahne/Mairesse took the lead, but after five hours the Alfa Romeo of Pinto/Galimberti took over. The first BMW (Munaron/Eppelein) retired, and soon Jacky Ickx/Glemser fell victim of overheating too. Hahne/Mairesse were in the lead once more but BMW was in trouble keeping the temperature down. Alfa Romeo’s Pinto/Galimberti retired too.

After twelve hours, Hahne/Mairesse were still in the lead, followed by fellow BMW drivers Pascal Ickx/Langlois (3 laps down) and De Keyn/Lagae (Alfa Romeo, 5 laps down).

Disaster struck for Mairesse, who could not restart the car after a pit stop. Now Ickx/Langlois were comfortably in the lead, and while De Keyn/Lagae could make up a little ground they could not beat the BMW. Third home were Patte/Caddy with Volvo, followed by the first Mini (Haas/Schyns/Gilmont), an excellent fourth overall. Austin Cooper won the King’s cup.
