For the first time, the Spa-Sofia-Liège rally was replaced by a gruelling long -distance event on the Nürburgring. It took a while and a lot of money to convince the Germans of this idea. The Belgian army helped out with hospital facilities.

The cars should run a pace of at least 102,6 km/h during the day and 67 km/h in the night.

It was a typical event in which DAF could shine, claiming two class victories. The overall winner was a Mustang of Greder/Rives, the GT victory seemed to be claimed by Mairesse, but after 81 hours his rear axle broke, handing victory to Ising/Degner. Third in GT was the Czech Tatra of Vermirovsky/Hadjusek.
