The race for the biggest cars was dull to say the least; Nöcker and Pendleton were absent, so Lindner (Jaguar) was on his own really and took the lead in front of Sparrow (Jaguar) and Trana (Volvo). Soon Sparrow took over since Lindner retired at the pits with water loss, and duly won the race with Trana second and Neerpasch (Volvo) third. The second race was most promising, with Slotemaker and Sears the obvious favourites while the red Squadra HF Lancias would win the beauty contest. Slotemaker (Cooper S) had been fastest in practice but Sears (Cortina GT) had his eyes set on the overall victory. He was away quickest, but Slotemaker was on his tail and passed him at Gerlach corner. Sears retook the lead soon after, and behind them Cella and Patria followed with quite some distance. Sears pulled away slightly, but in lap 13 Slotemaker was in the lead again since Sears had to pit to repair a loose spark plug wire. After 50 seconds he left the pits and still managed to win his class despite protests from the Lancia team. Slotemaker won overall, and the 1000 cc class was won by Mantzel. The small cars started with a formation fight consisting of both Saabs (Karlsson, Rothstein) and two BMWs (Hahne and Grähser). Grähser was left behind after three laps, and Hahne started to threaten the Saab in front of him but had to settle for the class win and third overall in the end. Late in the race, Rösner (DKW) rolled his car at Tarzan corner - with a dislocated shoulder as result. |
