At ten o’clock in the morning, a new era for touring car racing began; the first round of the European Touring Car Challenge at the Nürburgring, a place where touring car races like this one had been held for a few years now. The race was started in four groups, each starting one minute after the other. Pre-race favourites Lindner and Nöcker (1962 winners) lost their compatriots Sparrow and Degner in the first lap: both retired with gearbox problems. Lindner took the lead nevertheless, followed by Böhringer and Waxenberger. |
