Fine weather made this 12-hour race a joy to watch. Apart from four “prototypes”, this really was a touring car race, just a few weeks after the 6-hour race.
Fastest of the touring cars in practice had been Lindner/Nöcker, and while the Abarth prototype took the lead in the race after lap 1, the German Jaguar seemed to drive to an easy victory. After three hours they had lapped the Fiats, who were joined by the Alfa Romeo of Braun. Behind them, three Volvo’s followed by a 2.6 Alfa Romeo.
But some of the main runners ran into problems. The fastest Fiat (Arena/de Langeneste) ran out of brakes, a 25-minute pit stop followed. In their effort to make up lost ground the Fiat engine broke a conrod.
Lindner came in with a broken Panhard rod, which took 40 minutes to repair - they continued in about 20th place.
Now Bianchi was leading and held it into the ninth hour. But then the Skogh Volvo inherited the lead when this Fiat ran into brake troubles too. When Frère left the pits, the Jaguar was only two laps behind, going faster all the time. Some laps they gained 50 seconds, and half an hour before the end the Jag was 1.45 minutes behind and closing. The last lap, and the Fiat still had 28 seconds in hand - but when the cars returned it was the Jaguar in front, winning the race 2,2 seconds in front of the Fiat.
