The 25 lap Saloon car race was the opening round of the 1962 British championship. At the front of the grid, no less than six Jaguars; with Harper (Sunbeam Rapier), Hutcheson (Riley) and Whitmore (Mini Cooper, its debut) best of the rest. The Jaguars stayed in front the whole race, with finally Parkes winning in front of Sears and Hill.
The 2000 cc class was led from start to finish by Hutcheson; Harper came close in the beginning, but retired with a broken engine, while the 1000 cc class was won by Love with teammate Whitmore in second. Christabel Carlisle just managed to finish in third with a sick car.
The smallest class (850 cc) caused a mild sensation. Aley (DKW) had invited two German drivers - but his own car fell ill, so he had to take the start in Mrs. (Jean) Aley’s car, which was more used to shopping these days. But since Mantzel’s car broke down after shattering the lap record, and his countryman Ruby was disqualified for a push start, the surprised Aley won his class.
