An accident took place in practice: Salvadori blew a tyre at Cascades, went straight on and into the lake, upside-down in the muddy water. A couple of marshals leapt in and pulled Roy out of the back door - which was a mystery, since Roy could not recall unfastening his belts nor being moved to the rear. His DNS came as no surprise. Fastest in practice had been Hill, he took the lead in the race and was never challenged. Sears was second for a while but was passed by Parkes soon. Next up was Hutcheson, with Love and Carlisle fighting close behind.
Love now started to close on Hutcheson, leaving Carlisle behind - who soon retired with another failing clutch. Love passed Hutcheson once, but the latter fought back and took over again.
In the last lap, Parkes suddenly slowed down and was beaten to second by team-mate Sears, and Hutcheson had overcooked things at Knicker Brook where he rolled his car, leaving the class victory to Harper. Love won the 1000 cc class and was the new champion.
