Blydenstein and Bianchi were fastest qualifiers for the class 3 and 4 race, and with the news that on the same day Love and Whitmore had won the first BSCC race at Snetterton, the saturday night dinner was cheerful. But John Cooper wouldn’t take any risk, asking the drivers to hold station for the first seven laps. He would show a spare wheel to indicate that the final lap was coming up, and they could race. After the Le Mans start, Blydenstein fumbled with his seat belts so Bianchi went past and took the lead. He was lucky that there was some distance between them when he nearly crashed into the back of Bianchi - the slipstream effect was new to him.
John Cooper wasn’t holding up the spare wheel in the last lap (he never intended to do so in the first place) but one of the mechanics pointed to the spare. Blydenstein thought “now or never” and used the slipstream effect to his advantage this time, and the counter of Bianchi was too late - the Belgian was beaten in front of his home crowd.
