This race was thought to be a cracker: the usual bunch of Jaguars were expecting a visit from America: Gurney with the mighty Chevrolet Impala. He duly qualified on pole, with Hill, Salvadori and Parkes next, with McLaren, Taylor and Baillie on row 2.
The Jaguars had the better start, but the Impala rocketed down the straight and passed the Jaguars easily. Shepherd spun at Copse, and collected Pilsworth - both were out.
Gurney held the lead with ease, the Jaguars followed while Hutcheson (Riley 1.5) had a nice battle with Kerrison (Jaguar 2.4). A Mini fight took place between Whitmore, Aley and Aston - the latter revealing impressive speed on the straights, possibly thanks to a Downton-tuned engine.
Lap 3: Salvadori was black flagged for an open boot, he came in to have it fixed and stormed away again. Hill was now second, and catched Gurney in the bends, only to be left behind on the straights. In lap 6, the leaders lapped the Mini battle, but of course Whitmore retook them in the next corner, only to be left behind for good on the next straight.
Lap 8: Gurney was still in the lead with Hill closing in before the corners. Aston was leading the small class, since his car was faster on the straights than Whitmore’s.
Salvadori was suddenly missing, having retired with engine troubles, and then Gurney had to retire as well when a wheel came off. Hill continued and won, setting fastest lap in the process. Harper won his class, and Aston finished 0,4 seconds in front of Whitmore.
