The new championship started off with Shepherd and Gaston in Austin A40’s on the front row, together with Whitaker’s A35 and Young’s Anglia, while Williamson’s A40 had to start from the back following engine problems in practice.
Young and Shepherd were fist away, and Williamson came on strong from behind, a staggering fourth after lap 1. He passed Whitaker in lap 2, while Shepherd took first from Young, so the order was now Shepherd-Young-Williamson-Whitaker.
The order never changed since, so the main attention was drawn further back at the field, where Graber and Byrne had an interesting fight.
