The third running of the “Little Le Mans” for imported cars at Lime Rock was now an 8-hour race instead of 10; furthermore, GTs under 1100 cc and $4.500 were allowed to take part. It turned out Volvo got serious competition from a team of 750 cc Abarths; nobody knew where exactly one could buy a car for that price, but top drivers and a slick team gave them an unexpected 1-2 over last year’s winner Volvo. But it had been close; with just an hour to go, Riley and Rutan, 1957 and 1958 winners, were leading when the clutch broke, leaving the car in third gear. Riley pulled aside alarmed by the noise, but realised he could continue. Spectators gave him a push and he was on his way again, only to be disqualified for outside assistance...
All the Abarths now had to do was finish, since they had a big lead over the third-placed Volvo of John Christy and TV host Walter Cronkite. Saabs took the next 5 places, ahead of an NSU.
