“Tommy Sopwith leads the championship , having already gained maximum possible points in seven qualifying events…if however Sears can win his class and get fastest lap-as is extremely likely-he can equal Sopwith’s score … an additional on-the spot handicap event will be run off to decide the absolute champion“
Run in appallingly wet weather - the only wet race in the entire season - Sears lead initially and it took Sopwith, in his penultimate race before retirement, four laps to catch up.

So at the very end of a dreadfully wet day’s racing Sears and Sopwith raced over 5 laps in 2 BMC prepared Riley 1.5’s. Sopwith won the first race by 2.2 seconds. They then swapped cars and Sears won this time by just over 4 seconds, thus clinching the championship.

Jack Sears became the inaugural British national Saloon car Champion and was presented the Bonneville trophy by Marcus Chambers - BMC ‘s competition manager .
