The European Touring Car Championship

Willy Stenger, German, had a dream. A pan-European championship for Saloon cars, or Touring Cars, consisting of circuit races as well as hillclimbs.

Touring car racing was becoming increasingly popular, especially in Britain, Germany and the Benelux countries. Willy got FIA's permission to run a "challenge" in 1963 - it would not be a real championship until the early seventies. The series was designed around some already established races, some new ones were added - the series was on its way.
