1992;
the final year of Group A in Australia. The ATCC saw a change in
format, with a short preliminary for the top-6 qualifiers and now two
heats to decide the outcome of the race. A lot was done trying to
equalise the very different cars with a lot of bickering to the point
were the championship winning Nissan team threatened to abandon the
most high profile event of the year, Bathurt. But it was actually a
cracker of a championship, and produced some great racing between the
top contenders. While ultimatly the Nissan was still the car to have,
it was comparitively very slow in a straight line compared to the
Sierra, as was shown at Sandown early in the season.
CAMS kept throwing weight at it (which was the crux of the Bathurst
pull-out threat) to the point where the team declared the cars
dangerous, and Bob Forbes team abandoned their private GTR at Lakeside
for their old VN Commodore. (Jesper Hansen/ten-tenths)
