Campionato Italiano Velocità Turismo

1989 index

The Italian championship, just like the German one, was helped by the demise of the ETCC; now teams like Bigazzi, CiBiEmme and Schnitzer took part here. Apart from the top classes A1 and A2, with bent rules so the Sierras could not dominate but the Alfa 75 Turbo was helped, there were another 4 Group A classes and 6 Group N classes as well, all fighting for the overall title. Overall placings were considered too, so the champion would be one of the top cars but the title nearly went to the A2 (1987 version) of the BMW M3 with Brand. Cecotto, having started the season in a Schnitzer A1 BMW M3 switched later to A2 and secured the title.
