Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft

Air - 1988 index

Record entries, more involvement of Mercedes and both Ford and BMW wanting to beat them: it looked all very well in 1988, and even more stars entered the field: Ludwig and Hahne were now DTM regulars, just like Snobeck and Cudini from France. Former formula 1 drivers Danner and Cecotto ha a full-time job here as well.
But no season without problems of some kind. The Sierra Cosworth, finally replacing the XR4 TI won a little bit too easy at the start of the season, and rather than adding more lead now an air restrictor seemed to be the instrument to bring the cars together. In two steps the Sierra was strangled, but it remained competitive despite obvious complaints. Another source for anger was the wild driving style, culminating in four (!) starts at the Salzburgring - and never a finish. The race was cancelled.
In the end it was Ludwig (Sierra) who beat Mercedes semiworks driver Asch, while another Ford of Hahne finished third in the championship.
