The 1982 Rennsport Trophäe was the top touring car series in Germany, though the good old Capris still managed to win the the Rennsportmeisterschaft. The series had a little boost in the fact that Stuck, Brun, Müller Jr and Quester all had a full season in the mighty BMW M1, while division 2 was spiced with two "works" Zakspeed cars and two Ringshausen Escorts besides some Toyotas, BMW 320s and one Audi. But despite this, the fields remained thin, just over 10 cars in Division 1 and mostly around 15 for Division 2 - and no new cars to speak of, the new Group A far inferior to the old Group 2 and 4.
Still, racing was worthwhile, Stuck having the upper hand in Division 1 with his Schnitzer car until he had some retirements mid-season. In division 2, Boller with his private car had an incredible start of the season against such opposition, but he was helped by Selzer who was very unlucky indeed. When Stuck failed to score at the Avus (where Boller finished third), Boller took the lead in the championship which he never lost. The Zakspeed team failed though van Ommen scored three wins but teammate Braun never won. Selzer got his act together at the end of the season, winning two races. Other notable performances were by Müller Jr (four wins after the Stuck domination was over) and von Bayern, who improved during the season and ended with five podiums.
