The only sensible thing that one can say on the 1981 World Championship is that it only was contested in six races - we'll forget the "drivers championship" here, which had a whopping 14 rounds, including the Spa 24 hours - as if the makes WC wasn't mad enough!
Fortunately, this was the last year of a championship which never reached the expectations of 1973-1974. Looking back, 1976 was perhaps its best season; 1981 certainly wasn't. Lancia took the title again, this time helped by BMW who won the tragic Nürburgring 1000 km.
