The 1976 championship had been close for most part of the season - but that had more to do with sheer luck than with close fields. 1977 saw an even better Porsche, some entries of the far from raceworthy Turbo IMSA BMW 320 and a string of teams with private 935's who picked up the wins if the factory didn't - and that happened all too often.
