World Makes Championship

A Man with a Good Car - 1976 index

Eagerly awaited: the World Championship for silhouette cars, replacing the Sportscar championship (that was the intention) which had been in steady decline since the early 70's. But at the time of the conception, it was 1973 - before the oil crisis. Ford had lost interest in the meantime, BMW's intended supercar was far from ready and only Porsche had worked steadily. In the ens, they were the only ones with a competitive car; Lancia had a nice but untested and unlucky car, BMW sent three cars which were outdated really; and their turbocar was fast but very fragile. Since Porsche had a string of bad luck and had some troubles with the rules, the championship was open right until the end - but Porsche came out on top.
