The 1973 World Sportscar Championship was a fight between Matra and Ferrari, the blue cars champion in the end.
But in the back row, another fight took place: the German prestige championship was all about Ford, BMW and the prototype Carrera RSR from Porsche, culminating in a fight in front of the home crowd at the Nürburgring. Porsche kept the upper hand, even winning the Targa Florio outright. The importance of these races in underlined in the fact, that Ford only sent one car to Sweden for the ETCC, preparing cars for the 1000 km race - while BMW did not send any works car at all. One would like to think that the ETCC was more important...
