No more hillclimbs anymore but only permanent racing tracks; the Italian championship turned out to be a fight between Amighini (Abarth 1000) and "York" (Giannini 700) with 1972 champion Ricci following closely. As usual, the classes with the fiercest cmpetition had a slim chance of the overall title, but the titles for each subdivision made up for that.
