Since the prime interest now moved to the new (and disappointing) Rennsport Meisterschaft, the DRP could return to its basics; no works teams to spoil the championship. Pre-season favorites included Franz and his Fiat; Schmidt (Steyr-Puch); one of the Alfa guys like Meyer or Bertrams; Weiss and his Abarth or perhaps one of the Alpine drivers. But nobody considered Rösser (BMW 1602) as a title candidate, especially since any Escort TC entry would cause a lot of trouble. But the small team ran by his brother built a competitive car, using parts from Koepchen and Alpina; and Rösser never retired, unlike his competitors. A well-deserved championship in the end.
