The championship this year had a few changes. First, group 5 cars were allowed, but unfortunately Great Britain and Europe used different rules: while the British allowed full Formula 2 engines in Corttinas or Escorts, the continent did not allow the change of engines to 4-valve heads. Apart from this, cars over 5000 cc were allowed now for the first time. Furthermore, the Budapest round was exchanged for the fast and dangerous race at Brno, a future classic.
The new rules did not really lead to an invation of spectacular cars. The odd fuel-injection was added, but the only supercharged car, the Alfa Romeo GTA/SA was unreliable. BMW fielded works 2002's, and became champions in division 3. But the overall champion came from division 1, Warwick Banks with the 970 Mini Cooper S, while Rhodes in an 1.3 Mini was champion in division 2.
