For the 1966 championship the 500 km race was not taken into account for the under-1300 cc competitors for the simple reason that the counterpart for over-1300 cc cars at the Solitude was cancelled. The championship, despite its complicated bonus-points system was ex-aequo won by Josef Schnitzer (BMW) and Herbert Schultze (Alfa Romeo GTA).
